Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Set the table, open the wine, light some candles. Slip on this disc. Let the gentle sounds of André Rieu's slippery fiddle and fur-tipped orchestra lull you with classical music's most memorable soothers, from "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Plasir D'Amour" to the largo from Dvorák's New World Symphony and Nino Rota's "A Time for Us," which opens and closes the collection. Lightweight stuff, yes, but ingenuously arranged and performed, and the ribbon of reverb that surrounds the orchestra will please erstwhile Mantovani fans. --Jed Distler

Item: Ives: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4/Hymns Review: Ives's First Symphony is an attractive, conservative piece with a gorgeous slow movement based on a hymn tune and a finale that sounds strangely like early Bruckner. The Fourth, on the other hand, is arguably his masterpiece, and one of ...
Item: Saint-Saëns: Symphony No.3/Debussy: La Mer/Ibert: Escales Review: Recorded in 1956 (Debussy, Ibert) and 1959 (Saint-Saëns), these jewels from stereo's golden age, all Munch specialities, receive their finest transfers yet. Close use of the microphone suits Munch's La Mer , a seascape illuminated in primary colors rather than conventional ...
Item: Mysteria Review: From the first notes of the Lenten antiphon "Immutemur," you feel a soothing, reassuring calm from Chanticleer's sensuous, lyrical legato style and perfect unison expression and phrasing. This is first class singing, no matter what the repertoire. But this just ...
Item: Music for Ballet Review: This is the sixth album of highly acclaimed pianist, Marina Stolyar. Album features very exiting and inspirational music from an unknown ballet, "Fiametta" by L. Minkus. This album can be used for all levels and any style of teaching as ...
Item: Actionable Offenses: Indecent Phonograph Recordings from the 1890s Review: New York City, 1896. A man walks into a bar. He sits down, orders a beer, and laughs long and hard at the bartender's newest story. It's a good tale, though too bawdy to repeat at home. The next day ...
