Editorial Reviews

Album Description
Over 2 million albums sold in the UK since the release of "The Voice" in 2000. Undoubtedly the most romantic, passionate and personal musical offering from Russell to date.

Russell Watson's Amore Musica is his first since recent throat surgery--and his fans need not worry. While his sound remains somewhat manufactured (the engineers deserve credit for equalizing his tone), he knows how to put across a heart-rending melody whether he's crooning ("cooing" would not be an inappropriate word either) or using a darker, fuller tone. The inspirational "You Raise Me Up" contains great examples of both. He's backed by a chorus in a song made up of a medley of tunes from the film Gladiator. Lara Fabian joins him in a duet called "The Alchemist." He wrings every bit of emotion out of "I'll Walk with God" from The Student Prince. A tune based on Elgar's "Nimrod" sits very high, and Watson occasionally sounds as if he's shouting. Purists might argue with the many breaks in his voice between registers, while his fans love precisely these tics, but by now those who love him will know that they want this CD and will not be disappointed. Opera lovers--or even Bocelli fans--need not apply. --Robert Levine

  • Item: Ludwig van Beethoven: 9 Symphonien Review: By general consensus, Herbert von Karajan's first (1963) Beethoven cycle for Deutsche Grammophon is the best of the four (!) that he recorded. The Berlin Philharmonic was in top form, and they had not yet made an artistic fetish out ...
  • Item: Arnold Schoenberg: Serenade/Five Pieces For Orchestra Review: Schoenberg's Serenade is comparable to Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale . Both works are effective modernist parodies of classical genres. But unlike Stravinsky, Schoenberg's treatments of marches and waltzes are never coolly burlesque, but hyper expressive--indeed, expressionist. Pierre Boulez conducts his Ensemble ...
  • Item: Frederic Chopin: Complete Works For Piano And Orchestra Review: Claudio Arrau's meditative and weighty traversals of the concertos pale compared to the dynamism and note-to-note intensity of his live fifties versions. Eliahu Inbal's deferential, soggy leadership doesn't help either. Both musicians, though, rise to the rarely played Krakowiak 's formidable ...
  • Item: Farewell: Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 39 and 45 / Yun: Chamber Symphony I Review: This is the first release with the Munich Chamber Orchestra under the baton of its youthful and energetic new artistic director Alexander Liebreich, one of the most interesting and versatile conductors of his generation. Fresh and stylistically informed performances captured ...
  • Item: Natalie Dessay - Mozart Heroines Review: On previous releases, Natalie Dessay has established herself as perhaps the leading coloratura soprano of the day. Consider, for example, her artistry on the 1998 Lakmé . From the sensational fireworks heard in The Magic Flute 's "Queen of the Night" arias ...
